Papa

(For as long as she lives and probably longer, she will never forget his face...)

His lines and crinkles
Mapped a life long-lived
and a truth well-worn

The awake in his eyes
Lit a curiosity in her five year old self
To fuel her quest
For a truth
as long-worn

His salty smile
Carried a rusty laugh
Across the living room and over the decades On a magic carpet
Fat enough
For two

His bare head
Whispered of more "handsome" days
When he wooed his foundation
And persuaded a rainbow
To dance hand-holding
And weave tall tales

The drop of his brow
Marked the soul of a warrior
Conquering
Horse falls and bank raids
Skeletons and child hurts
Drink daze and heart stops

His freckled skin
Beckoned outdoor play
After 70 years
O f roaming
And learning
And loving
Wild Texas lands

His lines and crinkles
Around awakened eyes
And salty smiles
Lighting his bare head
The brow drop
Framing his freckled skin

Offered the secret key
To the buried treasure
Of a
True Life
Long lived
and
Well worn

Papa
