74 year old Ninfa Colangelo knew
that it was important to stay physically active. But she also knew that
there was no way she was going to go to a gym and workout alongside men
and women half her age. But then her chiropractor Dr. Anthony P. Lauro,
46, of Pomona, New York told her about a new exercise facility that he
opened as part of his practice. The program known as Stay Fit Seniors
Inc. ™ is designed for those 60 years old and older.
“I feel comfortable on the equipment in Dr. Lauro’s practice,” said
Ninfa Colangelo. “I like knowing that he’s around to keep an eye on me
as I exercise.”
The Stay Fit Seniors regimen includes regular chiropractic adjustments
combined with circuit training on state-of-the-art exercise equipment in
a supervised 30-minute workout. It is free for life and is open to the
patients of the attending chiropractor. Stay Fit Seniors is the
brainchild of Dr. Lauro’s partner Dr. Roger A. Russo, 50.
“Until now nobody has addressed the segment of our population that
stands to benefit the most from a regular exercise regimen ─ our
seniors,” said Dr. Russo. “Every element of our program, from the choice
of exercise machines to the music and the instruction as well as the
trained chiropractic care professionals standing by, has been tailored
to a senior audience.”
Dr. Russo opened the first Stay Fit Seniors facility in 2004 at his
chiropractic office in Congers, New York. Soon after, Dr. Lauro came on
board opening one at his practice. The outfit got a great boost in March
of 2007 when legendary fitness icon Jack La Lanne endorsed the
innovative program.
“I don’t care how old you are 60, 70, 80 or 90,” said Jack La Lanne who
at 92 still exercises 2 hours a day. “You can still change your life and
improve it. Stay Fit Seniors is perfect for seniors because its use of
hydraulic equipment in a circuit training format can be adjusted to meet
the individual’s abilities.”
Jack La Lanne’s endorsement came just one week before a University of
British Columbia researcher released findings noting that senior
citizens overwhelmingly prefer to exercise alone or with other seniors.
The study is to be published in the April issue of the Annals of
Behavioral Medicine
“Regular exercise combined with chiropractic care ─ the Stay Fit Seniors
program ─ can offer seniors a healthier, more active life,” said Dr.
Lauro. “As I tell my patients, I’ll help you maintain a healthy and
flexible spine with regular adjustments; you maintain a strong and
healthy body through exercise.”
The Stay Fit Seniors program is fast gaining the attention of
chiropractic industry leaders. Dr. Terry Rondberg, President of the
World Chiropractic Alliance said, “I think this program is brilliant and
one of the best ways we can position our profession as a wellness
solution. I urge every doctor of chiropractic to get involved in
promoting the Stay Fit Seniors Program.”
Stay Fit Seniors is available for licensure to chiropractors across
America. A chiropractor in Darien, CT recently signed on.
Ninfa Colangelo now goes to her
chiropractor’s office several times a month to exercise. A friend of
hers who lives in Florida part of the year can’t wait for one to open
there so she too can, year-round, be a stay fit senior for life. To
