Visiting American Girl Place

American Girl Place has arrived in New York and it's taking the city by storm! This past Valentine's Day, February 2004, my daughter, Madison, my sister Sarah and her daughter Sydney and I were lucky enough to spend the afternoon and evening at American Girl Place.

Our girls, already owners of American Girl dolls were well prepared. They had brought their dolls with them for a day of beauty, theatre, and food! Our adventures started when we arrived to a place so packed with goodies that I thought the girls eyes would pop out of their heads! They didn’t know where to look first, but finally we decided to enter the room devoted to newest dolls American Girl today. As they gazed up all the great items they could start asking for they noticed the Doll Hair Salon. It was immediately decided that their dolls needed their hair re-done. We joined the throngs of on-lookers as each doll was placed in the salon chair for restyling.

While we waited we spoke to many of the girls, some came from New York and New Jersey, but many others had traveled from as far north as Massachusetts and as far south as Georgia. Many of the girls were dressed exactly like their dolls and they all said the same thing “this was the best place ever!”

There was quite a wait for the dolls hair to be restyled so we headed up to the other floors to look around. The girls thoroughly enjoyed looking at the various dolls, reading their stories and getting a glimpse at their past.

After a while of “window shopping” we were ready to head to the American Girls Revue. The theatre, which only seats 133, is cozy which allows for a very personal experience. The eight girls who play in the hour-long musical, which is based on the American Girls Collection books, are fabulous. They act well, are cheerful and have wonderful voices. Our daughters and all the children in the audience were mesmerized – as were the parents!

Following the Revue we took our daughters down to finally watch their dolls get their hair done. The beauty stylists were really nice, asking all the children about their dolls, when they got them, how long they had them etc. The stylists took what could have been a very impersonal experience and really connected with all the kids – not just ours. They were also gracious enough to agree to be photographed for this article so my thanks go out to them.

Once we had our daughters and their dolls it was up to the American Girl Café for dinner. As we entered the Café my sister and I commented how lucky are girls were to experience this – it was something that wasn’t available to us when we were kids. The Café is whimsically decorated in black and hot pink. The napkin rings are flowered hair bands that all the girls seem to immediately adorn. Each doll gets it’s own chair and china and while we nibbled on the appetizers the girls fed their dolls. My sister and I had fun with the “table talk” boxes that hold little questions to stimulate conversation. Although there is never a lack of conversation with the four of us it was fun to hear the answers the girls gave to the questions. Our food arrived and we dined enjoying ever bit of the meal. The best part has to be the dessert though which is presented in little flowerpots.

During coffee I spied a grandmother in the Café with her two granddaughters and had to get her thoughts. Grandma Joan was there with her two granddaughters aged seven and three. She mentioned that they had decided to do this on the spur of the moment with her grandkids and that they were having a wonderful time. She said it was a “wonderful experience to share with her granddaughters.”

Finally it was time to go and we packed up our dolls, got our coats and went downstairs to leave. The girls couldn’t leave without one last look around the store. Although all the cashiers were closing down for the night they were still kind enough to talk to the girls and not scoot them out the store. They gave the girls catalogs so they could create their birthday wish lists and we headed out the door.

As we drove out of New York the girls were buzzing about their day. They had such a spectacular day that they both said it would take a lot to top it!
