Sun Safety
With temperatures hitting 95°F and
above I've been slathering my kids in SPF 45. What do you need to
know about keeping your grandchildren safe in the hot summer
sun?
Limit Time in the Sun
-
The UV rays are most intense between 10
a.m. and 3 p.m so if you can schedule outside playtime before or after
these hours.
-
If you or your grandchildren must be
outside - see the shade!
-
Umbrellas and trees are good forms of
shade, but also make sure your grandchild has on sunscreen!
Wear Cover-Up Clothing:
-
Some manufacturers now make clothing
that is labeled with a UPF of 15 to 50+ look for this when purchasing
clothes for your self or your grandchild.
-
Wear long-sleeved shirts, sun-safe swim
suits, and hats.
-
Choose darker colors - if you can bear
it! They absorb UV better than lighter ones.
-
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and don't
forget about your neck. Some hats have flaps that can be pulled
down to protect that sensitive area in the nape of the neck.
-
Make sure you and your grandchild have
100% UV-blocking sunglasses and have them wear them all the
time.
Use Sunscreen
-
Always make sure that your grandchild
is wearing a sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or
greater. Personally I use at least 30 on my kids.
-
Choose water-resistant sunscreens that
will stay of even if you sweat or swim. Remember to reapply
often!
-
Make sure that the sunscreen you are
using is current and not older than 2 to 3 years.
-
Apply it at least 30 minutes before
going in the sun, and always use more than you think you need!
-
Give your grandchild (if they are old
enough to not eat it) a lip balm with sun protection.
